A huge present for my small contribution at the Game Theory Summer School in Kyiv arrived today! ๐
The school was jointly organised by the Kyiv School of Economics and the Ukrainian Catholic University. The main work was carried out by the local organisers, who put together an excellent programme ๐
Our framework offers a rigorous foundation for understanding how social norms evolve and persist, even when people sometimes misjudge, act randomly, or punish at a cost.
It unifies earlier results and opens the door to studying robust cooperation in complex societies.
๐งต (6/6)
Some of these norms are especially interesting: they fix the payoff of any mutant strategy, similar to zero-determinant strategies in direct reciprocity (Press & Dyson 2012).
๐งต (5/6)
In our new work, we analytically characterize all stable norms under public assessment.
โ
We recover the known cooperative norms
โ
We extend to cases with errors and costly punishment
โ
And we discover new, more general stable norms
๐งต (4/6)
Previous studies found a few โgoodโ norms (like the famous leading eight) that can sustain cooperation.
But we still lacked a complete analytical characterization of all evolutionarily stable norms, especially when actions or judgments are noisy, or when punishment is possible.
๐งต (3/6)
Indirect reciprocity means:
๐ I help you,
๐ others see that,
๐ and later, someone else helps me.
This works only if society shares a norm about who deserves help. These norms link actions to reputations, and reputations to future treatment.

๐๏ธ๐ฃ New paper "Exact conditions for evolutionary stability in indirect reciprocity under noise" with @chilbe.bsky.social & @yohm.bsky.social
How can cooperation persist in large groups of unrelated individuals? Reputation ๐ฃ๏ธ But which social norms make this stable, even when mistakes happen?

Attended my first RHINO conference (APCTP Workshop on the Roles of Heterogeneity in Nonequilibrium) this weekend ๐ where I had the pleasure of giving an invited talk.
The event was held at Pukyong National University, Busan, & was wonderfully organized by Seung Ki Baek + Eun Lee ๐ ๐โโ๏ธ
We're organizing the "APCTP Workshop on the Roles of Heterogeneity in Nonequilibrium (RHINO 2025)"; the workshop will be held from 29 August to 1 September 2025 in Pukyong National University (PKNU), Busan, Korea.
