A huge present for my small contribution at the Game Theory Summer School in Kyiv arrived today! ๐ŸŽ

The school was jointly organised by the Kyiv School of Economics and the Ukrainian Catholic University. The main work was carried out by the local organisers, who put together an excellent programme ๐Ÿ™

Our framework offers a rigorous foundation for understanding how social norms evolve and persist, even when people sometimes misjudge, act randomly, or punish at a cost.

It unifies earlier results and opens the door to studying robust cooperation in complex societies.

Some of these norms are especially interesting: they fix the payoff of any mutant strategy, similar to zero-determinant strategies in direct reciprocity (Press & Dyson 2012).

In our new work, we analytically characterize all stable norms under public assessment.

โœ… We recover the known cooperative norms
โœ… We extend to cases with errors and costly punishment
โœ… And we discover new, more general stable norms

Previous studies found a few โ€œgoodโ€ norms (like the famous leading eight) that can sustain cooperation.

But we still lacked a complete analytical characterization of all evolutionarily stable norms, especially when actions or judgments are noisy, or when punishment is possible.

Indirect reciprocity means:

๐Ÿ‘‰ I help you,
๐Ÿ‘‰ others see that,
๐Ÿ‘‰ and later, someone else helps me.

This works only if society shares a norm about who deserves help. These norms link actions to reputations, and reputations to future treatment.

Attended my first RHINO conference (APCTP Workshop on the Roles of Heterogeneity in Nonequilibrium) this weekend ๐ŸŽ‰ where I had the pleasure of giving an invited talk.

The event was held at Pukyong National University, Busan, & was wonderfully organized by Seung Ki Baek + Eun Lee ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™‡โ€โ™€๏ธ

What does this mean for real life? Success depends on balancing generosity, and adaptability. Cooperation works, but only when it aligns with the environment youโ€™re in.
