We find the balms as we do in these times, and last night's show by #Annahstasia at the @cafedunord.bsky.social (the Swedish American in particular) was absolutely one of them. The attention she's now getting is well deserved, so do yourself a favor and check out the album/see her live.

Upcoming concerts include Nigerian American singer-songwriter Annahstasia, queer country-music artist Fancy Hagood, lesbian alternative-pop musician Rio Romeo and the transgender, nonbinary singer-songwriter NoSo. Cafe Du Nord employees said the venueโ€™s allure can also be attributed to the fact that the venue is a launching pad for artists who are on major national tours or performing along the West Coast. Prior performers include Blink 182, Bon Iver and Janelle Monae. Cafe Du Nord has also given visitors new ways to experience some of their favorite artists. In honor of Lady Gagaโ€™s string of shows at Chase Center in Mission Bay next month, Cafe Du Nord is hosting a dance party to celebrate her discography. Promoters have also held other events for fans of artists such as Britney Spears, Madonna and Beyoncรฉ. No matter the event, MacNiven said his favorite part of any night is โ€œhaving 300 people ready to go crazy.โ€

YouTube video by candyaunty "Stacy's Mom" Fountains of Wayne live 1-18-09 SF

I had the unbelievably good fortune to attend this intimate, mostly acoustic Fountains of Wayne show at Cafe du Nord in '09. It was one of the best concerts I've ever attended, hands down.
I loved the way they upended audience expectations and breathed new life into this seemingly oversaturated...

The hardest part is letting go
The hardest part is letting go of who we love
And when we need to let go, we hold on twice as hard
Is what we were still what we are?

Fly Blackbird Fly - Had an amazing time seeing Lady Blackbird at a sold-out Cafe Du Nord with some 300 other Bay Area fans who braved a chilly Monday night to show their love for one of the greatest singers of our times.

Stripped-back and quazi-unplugged, her set with longtime accompanist, arranger, co-songwriter Chris Seefreid commanded rapt, needle-pin-drop-quiet audience attention even just with his rich acoustic and Fender Stratocaster guitars.

Standout moments were many among tunes from her albums, Black Acid Soul and Slang Spirituals.

In a spine-tingling, Elvis Costello-worthy tease, they brilliantly added a touching Roberta Flack homage amidst a gorgeous โ€œSomeday Weโ€™ll Be Free,โ€ fully owning a moment of Ewan McCollโ€™s โ€œFirst Time Ever I Saw Your Faceโ€ (a cover for which Flack won the record of the year Grammy in 1972). Chrisโ€™ tasty-trippy guitar moments on โ€œIt'll Never Happen Againโ€ took this bluesy-jazzy fave from her debut down a bit of a Curtis Mayfield path, adding micro-doses of psychedelic โ€œwah-wahโ€ in for good measure.

They encored with her signature cover of Jerry Hermanโ€™s classic โ€œI Am What I Am.โ€ Magnificent as ever, their slowed down arrangement lets you savor the power of every word of this important anthem as no other.

Iโ€™ll try to post a video clip of that moment below but not sure if BlueSky permits that yet (its on my FB and IG โ€” @dynovoice โ€” pages).

It was great seeing fellow Blackbird fan-friend DJ Rotten Robbie who opened the show (as well as in LA and Napa on this mini tour) with a fine set of vintage and Northern Soul-flavored sides (and bringing the audience much joy with his trademark mirror-ball necklace give-aways, which you can see us wearing in the lower right photo of the collage here).

I think everyone in the audience was feeling the energy and love all around, a good-vibing, healing evening of passionate music, a reprieve from our current strange daily days. Even the late start time didnโ€™t matter for most of usโ€ฆ
