The big danger for Europe now is complacency - that having apparently seen Trump off for now, that political leaders retreat back to their comfort zone."

"The lesson of the 1930s is that in such a contested world, containment is not enough. Europeans also need to build their deterrence, so they are better able to resist military and economic coercion"

What Europe needs now is a Neville Chamberlain - an essay I wrote for @bloomberg.com on how Europeans are missing one of the key lessons of the 1930s

22.01.2026 09:24 β π 70 π 27 π¬ 10 π 0Here is another statement by a western leader, this time Friedrich Merz, that it is hard to imagine Keir Starmer or any other UK political leader making. 21.01.2026 12:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Fascinating to watch Bessent shred what lingering credibility he retained as a semi-grown-up in the Trump administration. The most powerful reason to sell the dollar is that this compromised cretin is in charge
21.01.2026 12:20 β π 102 π 19 π¬ 1 π 0I think politics generally has been debased by the dominance of tailoring everything to social media, which has reduced the ability of politicians to articulate and opportunity to share longer, more complex and nuanced arguments, which Carney did so brilliantly and concisely here.
21.01.2026 11:58 β π 19 π 3 π¬ 1 π 0I think you're too generous. The problem is the hollowing out of Britain's political class of anyone with any experience or insight - a grim consequence of the Johnson and Corbyn fiascos. There is simply no way that anyone of Carney's calibre would make their way in UK politics.
21.01.2026 12:01 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I'm sure Starmer could understand the arguments, though as you say, I don't believe he is capable of articulating them. But I wouldn't say the same for most of the Tory front bench
21.01.2026 11:57 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In the grim world of Daily Mail trained editors that now dominates the commanding heights of British mainstream journalism, what they call it is "talking points". A strong opinion that will agitate and titillate rather than inform

Don't underestimate the extent that columnists are there to serve the interests of their publishers not the readers. They operate within an Overton window of acceptable opinions set by the editor. Everything you see by a staff columnist should be read with that in mind - and discounted accordingly

21.01.2026 10:26 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0One reason I am gloomy about Britainβs ability to rise to this geopolitical moment is the sheer parochialism and unseriousness of much of its media. The Times, which used to be a serious paper, does not have a single comment piece today on the gravest international crisis in 80 years
