The Danger of Silence When Academic Freedom Is Under Threat Inaction from rank-and-file workers enabled government censorship during the Red Scares.

You ever write something and there are so many parts you hope people engage with that you can't figure out which ones to quote?

I'll do a wee thread on the 3rd, and final, essay from my Red Scares series

This is the story btw (this report is fine, but is being decontextualized and amplified on X). It's reserve land, the 50 year lease is expiring, the Nation has previously warned they may not renew, they are now giving 2 years notice and waiving pad fees until then

By the book: Alberta schools pull at least 160 titles from shelves to meet provincial order | CBC News Alberta school divisions complying with a provincial order have removed dozens of graphic novels from their shelves, from illustrated versions of literary classics to coming-of-age memoirs and dramati...

What books did Alberta schools *actually* pull off the shelves in response to a provincial order? It took a lot of work to find out. We still don't have a complete picture. And some schools are still pulling material.

Free speech advocates say it's ban unmatched in Canadian history. #AbLeg By me.

I'd probably go with something like your option #1. I think it'd require some more digging to see what they want out of it (in terms of findings) if the existing lit wasn't a sufficient answer for them.

Global News’ Ben Mulroney Shared a Video of Airstrikes. The Footage is Actually from a Video Game. The host of Global News’ West Block gets lost in a misinformation-driven fog of war as American and Israeli forces strike Iran

NEW FROM ME:

While US and Israeli forces launched strikes against Iran this weekend, Global News' The West Block host Ben Mulroney reposted video of fighter jets that had been miscaptioned as American F-15s attacking Iran

I double-checked. Ben was actually sharing footage from a video game

As a 2016 UT Austin PhD grad, the speed of the deliberate dismantling of this public university is stunning. I wasn’t naive about Texas politics but still. Damn.

A graph of database connections, showing a massive spike at around 18.30.

This is what AI scrapers are doing to our platform. Our database capacity is just being ruined every time they initiate a fresh scrape and our tech team has to scramble, taking radical measures, to keep the platform up.

Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping. Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.

Sure. AI companies have ALWAYS been training their models on Wikipedia content, which under the free and open access model is available to anyone — including AI companies. Agreements like these require AI companies to limit and offset the strain they place on Wikimedia infrastructure.
