A lovely surprise to see @azumahcarol.bsky.social pop up in the Knowledge Equity Network video I've been watching on Perspectives on Educational Equity.

A growing problem. Something that frustrates me as an educator and parent too, as much as we encourage reading and limit screen time, the screen continues to draw attention.

A great article focused on the international student experience, with some interesting reflections on how to ensure students still get the most out of their time in the UK once post-study visas are shortened. #AcademicSky #HigherEd #LTHEchat @hepi-news.bsky.social

I think shared reading, both at home and in the classroom, may be one of the most important human acts. More, more, more is better.

This is first and foremost where the focus of the story should be. Of men, misogyny, and power.
I have always specifically hated this part of my city and the world, the "gentleman's clubs" that are sadly part of the same thing.

A busy free days in London for work, research and pleasure. Highlights will be visiting RSA House, our #JLDHE Annual Away Day and some annual leave for the Design and Disability Exhibition at the V&A.
Highlights of the train journey so far: watching three farmers herd a bull of the tracks.

More than 800,000 under-5s on social media... That is a problem. The constant unsupervised social media use by children is one of the most significant problems of our time - and it is starting earlier than most people would like to think. #socialmedia #earlyyears

Juries are not perfect.
Many of the worst miscarriages of justice have followed jury trials.
But the merit of juries is not so much the power they have, but the power they prevent others from having.
They mean a judge cannot just nod-along with prosecution evidence and give a guilty verdict.
Since stopping dependent visas for taught students, Iβve seen many families split - leaving young children with families - so a parent can get the higher education they need to provided the best future for their families.
That is tragic.
The super super sad thingβ¦
Right now money speaks. And if the political powers *really* want to see economic development - then they need to acknowledge the opportunity from international students AND their families.
Reducing dependent visas shrank our economy.
β¦ and I have so much pride to see some of our graduates staying in our city - supporting some of the most vulnerable children and families.
I get so frustrated by any anti-international students rhetoric. We should be so thankful for what we gain β and what they gain and take back into the world.
Totally agree @choroniven.bsky.social. I live in Hull and have seen our international students bring so much to our city. Gentrifying neighbourhoods; enriching our teaching by sharing their experience/perspectives; working in schools & care homes; and generally bringing much joy to my working life.

From a very biased perspective, the analysis suggests that in Yorkshire and the Humber, international students contribute Β£2.9 billion to the economy.
I worry any levy will risk this.
#AcademicSky #UKHE #HigherEd #UKbudget25 #UKeconomy #InternationalStudents
The growing economic footprint of international students The economic impact of international students in the UK surged from Β£31.3 billion in 2018/19 to Β£41.9 billion by 2021/22. On average, every parliamentary constituency in Britain benefits by Β£58 million. Some regions rely more heavily than others on this influx of global talent. In Sheffield, for example, international students contribute around Β£770 million annually to the cityβs economy, while across Yorkshire and the Humber, that total exceeds Β£2.9 billion. In cities such as Leicester, Exeter, Nottingham, and Dundee, universities are among the leading exporters, accounting for up to 15% of total local exports. These figures show how universities serve as economic anchors, especially outside the Southeast. International students contribute through tuition, housing, local spending, and by supporting jobs in retail and hospitality.
Another excellent blog from #HEPI, focused upon the economic benefits driven by international students within the UK.
