I attended school and university in Dunedin, and at one stage lived not far from the exchange, in Stafford St. The place, for me, was (and is not) as bleak as is being presented here.
The secondary school I attended had problems with paedophiles, but I noticed nothing while I was there.

Interesting...a fictional Dunedin that is a reflection of the state of mind of the author. It isn't a place I recognise, and I have spent 46 years of my life here.
