Not sure if it has been brought up, but Diodorus (20.7) says that Agathocles burned his ships after he landed in Carthage. Not sure if thatโs the mix up, but provides an alternative from antiquity and not just Cortes (and could say something about Sicilian still being under appreciated maybe?)

Read this while learning Italian a couple of years ago. Although I donโt think I can be of much help with the question, I will say that itโs such a wonderful and enriching read! Hope you enjoy it!

Following my last ancient card post, I wanted to also share this beautiful card of Darius I I just received! From the 1908 Stollwerck Album 10 series. Very fun to hold something so old and cool :)

If you want to check some out, just look up Stollwerk cards. They produced a lot of great looking Classics ones like Phyrrus, Alexander, etc. The descriptions on the back are always fun to read too.

Thatโs awesome! I think Iโve come across those Batman cards before. Iโve actually just purchased an even older (1908) card produced by the German chocolate company Stollwerck depicting Darius I. Iโll make sure to post it once I receive it :)

A promotional card produced by the W.D. & H.O. Wills tobacco company depicting the Gate of Xerxes in Persepolis. The card is in a graded holder, and was given the grade of 5 by SGC.
Iโm a (baseball) card collector, and recently picked up this 100 year old card of the Gate of Xerxes. I was fascinated to learn how much tobacco, chocolate, and other types of companies used the ancient past in their promotional cardsโฆgot me thinking about a possible reception project.

I was lucky enough to have breakfast with Erich Gruen this morning. It was honestly one of the best moments of my academic career.
Heโs someone I had heard a lot about and who has influenced my ideas and work for a while, and it was great to experience how wonderful of a person he also is.

Brayan Bello, Garrett Crochet, and Jarren Duran all stand together posing for a group portrait down the left field line at Fenway Park with the Green Monster in the background. All three wear the Red Sox City Connect uniforms with green jerseys the same shade as the Green Monster, reading โRED SOXโ across the front in white with their respective numbers in yellow. Green hats display the Red Sox โBโ logo in white, and pants are white with green piping detail downs the sides.

I definitely will! That symbol and its significance had a fascinating development in the ancient Mediterranean and even throughout history up to today. This is a context I didnโt know about, though. Really appreciate your help!

Figurine representing Ishtar. She holds a scepter on her left hand with intertwined animal heads. From the Louvre Museum - AO 12456
Help! Recently came across this figurine supposedly depicting Ishtar from c. 2000 BC. Her staff immediately reminded me of the caduceus associated with Hermes and messengers across the Mediterranean later on. Anyone have more info on what the staff could actually be/signify?
