I've been thinking about the way I go about Character Design, and I think I tend to look for the "sweet spot" of design, the middle ground of a number of ideas

Simple > SWEET SPOT > Complex
Practical > SWEET SPOT > Stylish
Familiar > SWEET SPOT > Unique
Inspired > SWEET SPOT > Original
