Twins roster projection: Weak spots, logjams, and dart throws two weeks from Opening Day
Quite a few changes to the rotation and bullpen since our last projection, plus some thoughts on why other changes are seemingly needed.

Danny Coulombe pitched well for the Twins before being traded at the deadline. But he's also 36, with injury question marks.
Will be curious to see how Coulombe fares this season compared to the various other left-handed relievers the Twins added instead.
Sounds like Joe Ryan is planning to join Team USA for the World Baseball Classic if they advance beyond Friday's game vs. Canada.
@ken-rosenthal.bsky.social reports Ryan "could be in play in some capacity for the championship game."

Bailey Ober made his second spring start today vs. the Red Sox and his fastball averaged 88.8 mph.
He threw 53 pitches and only one cracked 90 mph.

New podcast!
@johnbonnes.bsky.social is driving back from Fort Myers, so I opened up the mailbag for a rare solo episode answering listener questions about the Twins, the podcast, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
Fun show, assuming you have a high tolerance for me. www.patreon.com/posts/aarons...
It's important for beat writers to update each other on important news when they're away from spring training.
In my 20 years writing about and ranking Twins prospects, they've never had one this close to the majors with a wider range of potential career outcomes than Emmanuel Rodriguez.
Rodriguez's rare set of extreme skills fuels big questions and bigger upside: www.nytimes.com/athletic/708...
Emmanuel Rodriguez is one of the best, most intriguing, and hardest-to-project Twins prospects in my 20 years writing about their farm system.
My in-depth look at Rodriguez and why his uncommon mix of extreme skills fuels big questions and bigger upside: www.nytimes.com/athletic/708...

No surprises. Basically sending many of their top prospects to minor league camp.
Byron Buxton is back in Team USA's lineup and playing center field tonight after being hit on the elbow by a pitch Friday.
New podcast!
We've talked a lot about the importance of "post-hype prospects" for the Twins this season and new manager Derek Shelton agreed.
So today we discussed all nine players, looking at their 2026 outlooks and odds of staying in the future plans.

Lucas Giolito (#30) and Michael Kopech (#50) are now the only unsigned players ranked among @theathletic.com's top 50 free agents: www.nytimes.com/athletic/677...
Justin Topa has a 30.38 ERA this spring, allowing nine runs and recording eight outs.
I made my new Twins mailbag column free for anyone to read:
- Byron Buxton now, later
- Trevor Larnach still here?
- Trade deadline dividends
- Any front office changes?
- Brooks Lee expectations
- ABS challenge strategies
- Everyone loves $2 beers

Christian Vázquez, a free agent after finishing a three-year, $30 million contract with the Twins, has signed a minor-league deal with the Astros.
Vázquez won a World Series with Houston in 2022. Now at age 35, he'll compete for the backup catcher job behind starter Yainer Diaz.
I'm curious to find out if pitchers have a worse-than-expected performance on the pitch directly following a challenge that overturns a strike.
Wonder if their natural emotional reaction will lead to a worse quality of the next pitch.
Lots of side aspects of ABS to learn about.
Bailey Ober's average fastball velocity vs. the Braves tonight:
First inning — 90.4 mph
Second inning — 89.5 mph
He averaged 89.9 mph overall and topped out at 91.1 mph.
