SAS anaesthetist, SOBA SAS rep.
The stories we tell matter. I know this not from watching but from memory. I was just a child, held behind barbed wire in a U.S. internment camp, when an atomic bomb obliterated Hiroshimaβkilling members of my family.

There aren't enough postgraduate training numbers for doctors in the NHS.
Most departments have gaps requiring doctors.
There are doctors in need of jobs.
The solution to these issues are the two SAS contracts. They provide permanence, and an alternative career pathway for doctors.

βThe trouble is the reviewβ¦ avoids the difficult question of how you set that scope, that limit of what PAs can do.β
Responding to the Leng Review, BMA council chair @tomdolphin.bsky.social has spoken to the BBC about doctorsβ concerns over patient safety
We wrote a blog about our recent trip to London, for an @assocanaes.bsky.social parliamentary event.
Thanks again to all of the organisers of yesterdayβs event, and to our friends and allies. We couldnβt do any of this without you.

I had a great time at this event.
As the blog alludes to, our friends are awesome.
Our response to NHS England's Medical Training Review highlights the current lack of training places, the inflexibility of training and the need for SAS doctors to be included in this work.

Thanks to the @assocanaes.bsky.social for inviting @sascollective.com, and little old me, to come to this event.
It was great to refresh some relationships and meet some new people.
Alternative career pathways are the workforce solution we are all looking for, and the #SASsix is a roadmap.
βThere is no such thing as a non-training doctorβ.
Dr Emma Wain wonderfully summed up who SAS doctors are and why theyβre so important at our SAS Doctors Reception.

We are keen to showcase just how important SAS doctors are in the NHS and why they need more recognition across all specialities.
Dr Toeima speaks for her motion online at SAS conference.
Excellent motion from Dr Eman Toeima, representing London South.
Motion carried by universal agreement.
We need to gather these data. Knowing how many SAS leaders there are allows us to assess the trends. Measuring this also sets the expectation that this is important.

We are delighted that @ics-updates.bsky.social have chosen to endorse the #SASsix, joining these other splendid organisations.
We think that if everyone understood the importance of these things, and how much potential the medical workforce is currently losing out on, we might change the world!
Professor Read embodies many of the #SASsix, as a leader, an educator and a Specialist.
Supporting diverse routes for a career allows more doctors to achieve their potential.
We all benefit from doing this.
This is going to be a great event and opportunity to talk about SAS/LED careers and our important roles within the NHS workforce!
12.05.2025 19:40 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Really looking forward to this opportunity to engage with politicians and others over the contributions and needs of the SAS and LED workforce in the NHS. We often say that we are marginalised. Well, we ought to do something about that.
12.05.2025 19:22 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 0 π 1The #SASsix policy calls are: Every early career SAS doctor should have access to an educational supervisor. All SAS doctors should have equity of access to professional development opportunities relevant to their stage of career. All specialty doctors who meet the required capabilities should have the opportunity to become specialists. Senior SAS doctors should be offered the opportunity to be educators at every level on a par with consultants e.g. educational supervisors, clinical supervisors, directors of medical education. All extended roles in leadership and management should be open to all substantive medical staff that is, consultants and appropriately experienced SAS doctors. All LEDs employed for more than two years within one NHS employer should be offered the opportunity to transfer to the appropriate SAS contract.
Am I followed by any MPs?
The @sascollective.com have been invited to a parliamentary event next week, hosted by @peterprinsleymp.bsky.social, on behalf of @assocanaes.bsky.social.
We'd love to see you there!
The future of the medical workforce will be defined by SAS careers.

The Leng Review into the role of PAs and AAs has launched its survey for healthcare professionals. We strongly encourage all anaesthetists to complete the survey and to make full use of the free text sections to elaborate on their views.
