I do think it benefited mmos (smaller ones more so), but I see the double edged sword. Many do discord chat integrations, so you don't even need to login to interact with players!
At that point perhaps discord is just a social extension of the game.
Or the game is just an extension of discord.. 😬

Great topic! Made me really reflect on how MMOs used to be the only place to meet people and socialize at scale. Discord simultaneously benefited players when they were offline to stay in touch across games and time. But in so doing subsumed the role of social networking once exclusive to MMOs

They're the only type of a game any player can impact any other players' experience. The more walled off or sharded that is the less I enjoy it.
