I have a 13-year old (7th grade) who got transferred out of gen ed, and also a 10-year old who will likely be transferred out when he reaches middle school.

That’s wonderful! My son’s current program has no science, and social studies is about learning continents which he already knows. He’s completely capable of learning at least a modified curriculum, but gen ed won’t accommodate that. He’s not alone. Several students got moved out of gen ed.

She probably has no clue that IDEA has never been fully funded, so I guess that will probably never happen.

Our area was supposed to start an “in-between” program but then the school bond didn’t pass, and they scrapped the idea. Every student deserves to reach his/her potential. You are a huge blessing to the autism community!

Our area only has ASD programming for students with the most significant needs. Everyone else is moved to cognitive impaired programming to learn functional life skills if they can’t keep up with the demands of gen ed. There is no continuum of services and it makes me angry.

ASD students are so misunderstood. They are capable of more than others think, and have so much to offer if people take the time to understand and get to know them better.

How about fully funding IDEA? Are they going to use these cost cutting measures and apply it to funding IDEA? Our area has no appropriate programs for many ASD students who can’t keep up with the demands of gen ed.

Unconstitutional, but that hasn’t stopped Trump doing other illegal things. Whatever happens, they better start fully funding IDEA, so the students with special needs can actually get a free and appropriate public education.

IDEA has never been fully funded. Our area has no autism programs in school except for the most severely impacted. If things get any worse, I see no choice but to homeschool.
