28. The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs (1999)
this was everything. explores the full spectrum of love from pure elated romance to bitter cynicism in total unrepentant earnestness. the hit rate is crazy and even the bad songs add to the experience

coo btw
27. Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I (1999)
it’s kind of funny that Travis’ output in this band was so good and then his solo work was so panned he became a programmer and only sings in a church choir. but he will always have this (and his 0.0)!

26. Gotye - Making Mirrors (2011)
i had rejected much of that “indie” wave at the time so imagine my surprise when I cried twice listening to this (State of Art and Bronte). STIUTK is still a smash. plus it’s WEIRD. he got no business being retired

25. Andy Stott - Faith in Strangers (2014)
I saved ‘Violence’ from this 12 years ago and I am only hearing the album now. this post dubstep nightmare is a bit of me and I am so so so nostalgic for this extremely London sound. WOW.

23. Fergie - The Duchess (2006)
I am speechless. they were marketing her as a rapper. she was mimicking Mariah BAD. the Temptations sample made me laugh out loud. But the hits are HITS, the whole thing is ridiculous and I was never, ever bored.

21. The Avalanches - Since I Left You (2000)
plunderphonics and hip house are genres that I should love on paper but always ends up giving me the ick. this however I suspect will hit different in the summer but currently it’s giving study beats

20. Fela Kuti - Roforofo Fight (1972)
This was wonderful. Kuti and the band set out more to resolve the titular subject rather than exasperate those feelings of frustration further, balancing the fury of jazz and the soporific warmth of afrobeats

yes
19. Gracie Abrams - The Secret of Us (2024)
I don’t dislike Gracie but it’s hard not to see her, as a singer, as anything other than Taylor’s homunculus (Dessner’s version). she also needs to learn how to sing but I could see her getting better

18. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain (1971)
This was an absolute blast for a saturday night. i love the arch of the whole thing, a life bookended by that legendary, finale-sounding, 10-minute guitar solo and ending with a fleeting, farting(!) freak out
