A hand holds a book outside at a distance from a large building with a tower and flag. The book appears above a sidewalk. The book title is Trading on Art: Cultural Diplomacy and Free Trade in North America by Sarah E.K. Smith. The book cover shows twelve individual paper plates. On each, a state or province from North America is rendered in red, green, or blue.

New book! 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘈𝘳𝘵: 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘋𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 by NACDI co-founder @smithsarah.bsky.social is now out with @ubcpress.bsky.social.

The book examines how visual art shaped North American relationships during the rise of free trade.

Five women sit in a semi-circle in front of an audience. They are seated on stools with a backdrop of white walls punctuated by three large windows.

A scene from last night's "A Celebration of Women in the Art World" at Cowley Abbott, with panelists Lydia Abbott, Shelli Cassidy-McIntosh (Olga Korper Gallery), Kathryn Minard (Art Advisory), & Joyce Zemans (York University).
Went with some of my undergrad interns—a fabulous experience for all! ☺️

Students look closely at paintings on a table and on easels in a room with white walls, storage racks, and a low ceiling with fluorescent lights.

Visiting the @uoft.bsky.social Art Museum vault with students to examine & discuss historic Canadian paintings ✨🎨

Students stand in the storage facility of the City of Toronto Archives. Shelves stretch the full length of the photo and up to the ceiling, 40 ft in height, making the students look small.

Timeline cleanse c/o my class visit to @torontoarchives.bsky.social 🥰

A stone sculpture of a turtle sits on a black podium in the centre of a reflecting pool. The curved towers of Toronto's City Hall frame the background in front of a blue sky.

Turtle sculpture & reflecting pool by Solomon King in the newly opened Spirit Garden, Nathan Philips Square, Toronto.

It faces north toward City Hall & a list of names of the 18 residential schools that operated across Ontario.

Poignant stop on a heritage walk w/ my @uoft.bsky.social students.

A poster for the Peter H. Brieger Memorial Lecture, which I'm delivering. The title is "Impressive Money: An Art History of Print before the Press," and it's taking place on January 21 at 5pn in the Jackman Humanities Building. The poster shows a gold coin next to a metal allow pilgrim badge in the shape of a gold coin, and next to it a baked clay impression of that pilgrim badge.

Will you be in Toronto on January 21? Do you like art? Do you like money? Then come to this public lecture I'll be giving at the University of Toronto!

@designhist.bsky.social has been doing some work on Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's playgrounds & how kids fit into her overall design philosophy. Not exactly what you're asking but maybe still of interest. Keith, any texts to share?
