Swaying waves, gentle froth,
the water shimmers and sparkles.
Is it the dance of the setting sun?
The flicker and splash of scaly fishtails?
Or can she see the mermaids
as they frolic and play?

Honestly, I am absolutely disgusted by academics suggesting that AI can do the reading and writing for you. At a certain point, what you're bragging about is fraud. And in a broader sense, what you're contributing to is the erosion of knowledge and the destruction of trust in academic publishing.
And so we write to brilliant postgraduate students from Sudan, withdrawing the offers and scholarships they won in open competition with the best in the world. A sad day for the University of Oxford.
First book of the day (hours ago) was "Mr Silly". - Michael
Also out today in paperback was trip to the 90s and a prequel to Chocolat - Vianne by Joanne Harris www.runalongtheshelves.net/blog/2025/6/...
You know the best way to kill AI? Don't use it. Don't buy it. Don't share it. Don't give the people who use it your labour or your money.

Remember our pilgrimage to Westminster Abbey on the 185th anniversary of #PennyBlackDay to find Sir Rowland Hill? Please will you join me in writing to Royal Mail to see if they could help celebrate this year’s with a special postmark for the 6th May! Thanks everso! 😁🎩✉️🖤
So lovely to receive my @letterappsoc.bsky.social welcome cert and badge yesterday, and a delightful handwritten letter (obvs) from Dinah.
Meet Mackenzie Bly (not his real name; see back cover).
I wanted to write something purely funny, but fell in love with my lead character along the way.
It's out in August, but the lovely proofs, with cover by Jim Kay, have just arrived.
Repost before tomorrow (Sun) evening, and I'll pick a winner.
Born above a Barnsley sweet shop, taught French to grammar school boys, and once chased by an ostrich.
Internationally reknowned author Joanne Harris @joannechocolat.bsky.social joins Tarot DMs to talk about cards, cats, Chocolat and her new novel Vianne.

Couple of photos from a trip to Whittenham clumps (local nature reserve) the other day. It was SO beautiful to be out in the sunshine, enjoying the start of spring. And yes, going right through the patch of serious mud because my powerchair can handle it was definitely a highlight.
Just realised that the nonsensical email responses from allegedly David Lloyd re ending my membership are being responded to by a BOT/AI so now banging my head against a brick wall! It now makes sense why they don't make sense!

Happy World Book Day! I'm spending the day packing up ALL my books, ready to move house.
But I'm gonna take a break to update you on the Pillar of Popularity.
Jamie Smart's Bunny vs Monkey: Intergalactic Monkey Business! is still doing really well - it's our number 5 this week!
Totally agree. He was up against it.
Shops on the High Street if you want business please have enough staff to serve people. I’ve walked out of two shops this morning in Canterbury, ZARA-long queue/one assistant & NEXT - assistant not in sight. Thankfully now in @Waterstones Canterbury enjoying coffee & cake & books & great service.
I don't understand why anyone would walk into a book shop with an ice of any description? My parents would never let me walk about eating ice cream & I would have to sit on a sea wall or other spot until I had finished. Many years later I still do this - it makes sense & stops mishaps.
Time for this to go back up, three hours of warm, sunny weather and half the country's buying 99s
Sometimes, we have to look hard for the good news... and on Saturday IT DID NOT RAIN IN #NorthWales!!!
Can’t be certain Mackenzie Crook ever got the wax-sealed letter I sent back in 2021 but delighted to see letter writing is an important part of the plot for his new series… #SmallProphets ☺️📺✉️🇨🇦
We can't wait to welcome #writer Tania Hershman to our 'How to Get Published' conference. She'll be sharing her advice on craft and getting published across both #fiction and #poetry!

Here's a final piece of wisdom from the wonderful poet, and our 2025 competition judge, Liz Berry:
'To make a poem, to engage in something creative and attentive in a world which increasingly guides us only to consume is a beautiful and important thing, and that must not be forgotten. Keep going!'
This year's @favlit.org shelf... smaller than it might have been because I was away last weekend, sad to miss Marina Warner, Natalie Haynes, Ben Okri & more. And even this week can't see everyone! A whole universe of imagination & humanity spiralling out from this small North Kent town.
Listened to Dominic Gregory talk about his book #LifeboatAtTheEndOfTheWorld as a volunteer with the @RNLI Dungeness @favlit.org
He received a standing ovation for his work & the crew as well as everyone who volunteers for the RNLI. Can’t wait to read the book.

"The thing is, creative work isn’t predictive like that. It’s not a series of options. It’s not like scanning all possible outcomes and then making a move. It’s essential not to know what’s coming next."
