Urban Planning Has Never Been Neutral A Black History Month Reflection on History, Power, and City-Making

"Cities have always been shaped by power. The question for our generation of planners and designers is how we will use ours. Are you on the contributing path to a more honest and just practice of city-making?"

VRE plans more weekday trains, new weekend service by 2030 - WTOP News Virginia Railway Express plans to offer much more service in just a few years, according to CEO Katie Choe, who started work in January.

As I like to say, we should drop the term "commuter rail" and start using "regional rail" in the U.S.

Exciting to see VRE thinking about a future where the emphasis is on running more service all day, in both directions and on weekends.

Metrorail is among the greatest cosmopolitan infrastructure projects in modern U.S. history. It was envisioned during a time of ambition and civic optimism... I fear we couldn't built it today but I hope that changes in my life time. Here's to 50 more years of Metrorail and then some!

50 Years of DC’s Iconic Metro As our region’s iconic rail system turns 50, we ask the big questionsβ€”and some little ones, too.

I'll never forget the first time I rode the DC Metro. I was a young kid visiting with my parents from nearby Baltimore. To say I was completely transfixed and memorized would be an understatement. I still feel something special every time I ride it till this day. washingtonian.com/2026/03/11/d...

I hope I live to see the ushering in of the next Great Society Metro Era in the United States! Who knows maybe I'll be part of making it happen.

That original movement gave us BART, MARTA and DC Metrorail... planned at the same time but executed later Baltimore, Miami and LA.

Austin Voted for 22 Miles of Light Rail β€” So Why Does the Project Span Only 9.8? Austin’s light rail project includes just 9.8 of the 22 miles voted on, showing how major transit projects often require a phased approach.

The tension between ambition and delivery is common in transit. Projects evolve as designs refine and budgets shift. But when voters approve plans based on headline numbers, a reduced scope can cause skepticism or confusion.

MDOT MTA aims to improve on-time performance by empowering bus operators with real-time information The agency plans to have more buses feature Swiftly’s Onboard App by summer 2026 after piloting the technology in fall 2025.

β€œThe idea here is with each service change, we pick a cohort of operators, and we show them the data, and we say, β€˜Hey, you’re not operating to our standard, but you had no idea. Here’s how we can improve,’” Helta said.

This image shows diagrams of what life looks like with car centric cities vs one that has a multimodal transportation network.

Love this! Cities are inherently for people, not cars. Yet, we allocate so much precious space to the automobile. There's a reason why cities with the best quality of life around the world have fewer cars. More room for greenspace, more housing and less noise.

Mamdani’s Sunnyside Yard push illustrates shift on housing Plans to redevelop the massive site previously drew stauncher criticism from left-leaning politicians.

β€œThe consensus has emerged in the last several years that a dramatic increase in housing stock is necessary, whereas that was much more up for debate a decade ago,” Gianaris said... β€œThat new consensus would seem to inure to the benefit of a proposal like this.”
