Today a student came to me carrying a kind of pain no textbook prepares us to meet.
Life is so much more than deadlines, assignments, and work. It’s fragile. It’s human.
Sometimes just being there is what truly matters.
Let me tell you: You are enough. You've got this.

Scientists Explain the Mysterious Orca Boat Attacks YouTube video by New Scientist

Very interesting take on why the Orca attack boats and why we see less of this behaviour.

Very good turnout at the Cafe Scientifique of the Pitlochry Aberfeldy and Dunkeld group in Scotland last night.
Thank you for inviting me to talk about my favourite topic:
Seals, marine science and climate
Also a big thank you to the Nae Limits Cafe for hosting.

Ocean Mysteries: Hands-On Marine Science with Students #scotland YouTube video by OceanLars

One of the things I like the most being a scientist is to educate others. We had a few nice trips this past week as the weather enabled us to go far out in St Andrews bay.
Anyone interested in seeing the data?

I don’t care if you “believe” in climate change or not. CO₂ is a greenhouse gas — more of it means higher global temperatures. We’ve known this since 1896. Reducing emissions is simply smart. Yet the current US government keeps bullying other countries into a worse future for our kids. Great job. 👏

First trip out with students of @uniofstandrews.bsky.social as part of their #marine #ecology training this semester. Dry but windy.
We might even have collected some useful data 😊
Thanks to @seamammalresearch.bsky.social for letting us use their boat.

Flushing the channel into St Andrews Harbour #ocean #scotland #standrews YouTube video by OceanLars

Luckily storm Amy brought westerly winds, but there is still the need to flush the channel.

Cumulative impacts to global marine ecosystems projected to more than double by mid-century Pressures from human activities are expected to increase substantially, affecting marine ecosystems globally. To plan for a sustainable future, we need to forecast the distributions of cumulative effe...

By 2050, cumulative human impacts on the ocean could more than double—driven by warming, overfishing & pollution. Urgent action on fisheries, habitats & climate is needed to change course. 🌊 science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adv2906

Six key policy recommendations to advocate for marine conservation that matches the ocean’s dynamism - npj Ocean Sustainability Marine ecosystems face threats from human-induced stressors like climate change, pollution, and habitat loss. Despite international endeavors, significant gaps remain in understanding ocean dynamics. This article presents six policy recommendations to integrate plankton populations into conservation frameworks. These could be leveraged in the process approved at CBD’s COP16 in Colombia to update criteria for defining ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs) and supporting science-based Marine Protected Area (MPA) designations.

New @nature.com article outlines six key policy recommendations to align marine conservation with the ocean’s dynamism — especially calling out the need to include plankton and adaptive protected areas in global ocean governance. 🌊🔍 #OceanPolicy #Conservation

Protecting the Ocean We Need - Securing the Future We Want Covering nearly half of the Earth’s surface, the vast open-ocean and deep-sea environments of the High Seas are ecologically vital, critically threatened and among the least understood on the planet. ...

Big news for ocean governance!
Morocco became the 60th country to ratify the High Seas Treaty, triggering its entry into force this coming January.
This will protect biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction — nearly half of our planet’s surface. 🌊
