Being a leader also means teaching others to lead:

- Identify those with leadership potential and give them opportunities to take responsibility.
- Guide them to build confidence, empathy, and strategic vision.
- Lead by example: be transparent, generous, and open to learning yourself.

The goal isn’t to be indispensable but to build a team that can thrive on its own. Ideally, one day you’ll look at your team and think: “They’re better than me—they’re ready to lead their own teams.”

Continuing with my series on leadership, here’s a key insight about empowering design teams: great leaders don’t just guide the present—they cultivate the future.

A key part of leadership is identifying future leaders within the team and helping them develop the skills to guide others.

Time to market reduction, based on the efficiencies you get when using a good design system: less friction between design and dev, less time invested in low value tasks (moving pixels). Also, increase in NPS because designers now have time to think how to improve user experience.

Great design happens when teams stay connected to the world. Are you helping yours see beyond the day-to-day?

Without this perspective, design risks losing its value and purpose. How can leaders keep teams connected?

• Remind teams of their real-world impact.

A leader’s role is to bring the outside in: helping the team look up, connect with users, trends, and markets, and stay grounded in reality.

Over the years, I’ve learned valuable lessons about leading design teams. Here’s one I find crucial, especially in corporate environments:

Returning to Bluesky, if you let me do the basics quickly, I’m more likely to become a regular user and eventually explore things like lists or feeds. But the key is being able to write and read. And Bluesky nails this, capturing the essence that made Twitter so successful in its early days.

The rest of the features should complement or support that main goal. Make it easy for users to quickly understand how to use it and decide if it’s for them. Let them gradually discover additional features over time. Humans learn faster by experimenting than by reading manuals.

It feels like the original Twitter: you write your thoughts, people can comment, follow, or like. That’s it. Think about this when designing digital products: focus on a clear purpose for your product (what it’s for) and make that primary function stand out above all others.

Why do we love Bluesky so much, aside from the obvious political or social reasons? What draws us to its interface and usage model? Simplicity. It’s simple, with just two or three goals, and it hasn’t yet been overcomplicated with hundreds of features.
