The contrast with springtime is striking because the lake was almost flooded then (the jetty was submerged and the water was creeping around the dam wall corners). This level is okay, but any rain at all would make things better.

The Three Lives of William Conrad: More Than Just the โ€˜Heavyโ€™ Film noir lovers know William Conrad from his hard-edged and menacing roles in vintage black-and-white films. Most people know him from 1970s and 1980s TV cop shows like โ€œCannonโ€ and โ€œJake and the โ€ฆ

Here's my latest for @crimereads.bsky.social and it's about William Conrad, veteran film heavy, TV series lead, narrator of loco, wonderful cartoons and, most surprisingly, director of offbeat 1960s thrillers.

What kind of dogs do you keep? Poppy (kelpie-jack russell) dispatched a couple of rabbits when she was a kid. She was fast enough to chase foxes and bush rats in the open but they disappeared in cover. Sheโ€™ll still make a show of going after them, but her heart isnโ€™t in it.

That line is also used in the Tom Hanks movie โ€˜That Thing You Do!โ€™ (1996).

If the fox doesnโ€™t cut the rabbit numbers, it will be up to me to do it. So Iโ€™ve been trying the think of a g*n as just another land care tool. Watching videos of culling done the right way has helped me get a bit more comfortable with it. However, this is a bad time to be getting into g*ns in NSW.

I have a fox lurking around here and I would be glad if it culled some bunnies, but it seems to have no clue about stealthy hunting.

Alarmingly dumb reporting on @9news.bsky.social TV news this evening. 1. Trump administration โ€˜has repealed a scientific findingโ€™. Rejected, maybe, but not repealed. 2. Itโ€™s time to โ€˜stock up on stampsโ€™ before the price goes up. Thatโ€™s not how the post works.

โ€˜Chisholm [the magistrate] - who sat down to read the entire book [surely an obvious and basic step en route to deciding the case] - found the female protagonist was implied to be a child despite repeated references to her being 18โ€™ โ€“ i.e. she believed the implicit than the explicit.

Better here, by comparison. Mid-30s again, with westerly wind, โ€˜Shower or twoโ€™ forecast but it wonโ€™t happen. Fruit trees fading, flower beds torched. We got 30 minutes of light drizzle last weekend. Garden tanks low, bore pump broken, house tank at 50% (and stinky).
