remembering how i did some freelance work for a Cliff Notes-esque project--wrote about Moby Dick and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. no idea how many students paid for and got shitty notes from me.

"And wow! Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like … ow … ound … round … ground! That’s it! That’s a good name – ground!

I wonder if it will be friends with me?"

An open letter to Grammarly and other plagiarists, thieves and slop merchants To everyone at Grammarly, I am writing a book right now, a really challenging endeavor that no doubt someone in Silicon Valley will think it’s fine to steal the day it’s published. I’ve been a profes...

I finally lost my shit about so-called AIs, LLMs, enshittification & everything fucking evil that @officialgrammarly.bsky.social is doing. I'm fucking furious, and not just about what 1 company has done. An open letter to Grammarly & the rest of the LLM hype machine www.moryan.com/an-open-lett...

All that and the prequels -still- suck. Remarkable work.

A photo of text from Wuthering Heights including the words “Chevy Chase”

Nearing the end of Wuthering Heights, and huh?

near the end of Wuthering Heights—the Linton stuff drags a little (it’s fifty pages repeating the same relationship beats over and over), but it’s still good. And it really is fascinating to see how Heathcliff has been transformed into “moody hotness” when he’s a rabid squirrel in a human suit.

(It’s also terrifically well-written, in case that’s unclear.)

Good stuff, in that it makes you mad certain people aren’t currently on fire.

i continue to believe that the whole purpose of OBAA was PTA wanting to tell his kids that he'd always be there for them, no matter how ridiculous he was otherwise.

I was bothered by the way it grafted drug addiction in place of sexual obsession--there's good movie in there, but making it Hellraiser gave me expectations they couldn't live up to.

Yeah, that’s the only sane response. I also don’t see a lot of poor people getting accused of selling out—is this a legit problem, or are famous folks being defensive?

I think people have used "selling out" in two different, incompatible, senses for two different things. "Selling out" in the sense Scalzi talks about here -- taking paid work to earn a living -- has only ever been attacked by people who have never been poor, looking down at those who have.

Okay, I refuse to let go of the term “selling out” while rich performers are getting paid to promote fucking gambling apps.

It feels like he’s split between two different mechanics that have nothing to do with one another. (I managed one win with Void Form, which is easy to use at least.)

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

Pro-tip: when the guy at the weed store where you buy edibles tells you “these are his favorites,” trust him.

that's a reasonable response. (i did eventually watch the whole thing at home. it was fine.)

yes, but voters are also a large, infinitely complex system of wants and needs and assumptions. it's hard to yell at a blob to change and expect any result.

fascinating that they can create nuance between "persuasion" and "motivation" while failing to grasp basic facts. (thanks for pulling up an easy block, tho.)
