I think people have used "selling out" in two different, incompatible, senses for two different things. "Selling out" in the sense Scalzi talks about here -- taking paid work to earn a living -- has only ever been attacked by people who have never been poor, looking down at those who have.

Okay, I refuse to let go of the term “selling out” while rich performers are getting paid to promote fucking gambling apps.

i feel like people got tricked by all the commentary lumping in The Sopranos and Breaking Bad and Mad Men. Don was often a selfish jackass, but he wasn't a murderer. (And weirdly, I don't think MM ever really suffered from "fans misreading the core text.")

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for
