To be fair, a lot of people don’t know this history and only one version is often shared by nationalists because it’s the one that benefits from having French Quebecers believe immigrants rejected French.
Not just Italians. In my article on the same research you can see this also happened to Greek, Jewish and other immigrants at the time. It explains why many ended up integrating into the English side. Self-inflicted wound, as they say.

I’m sorry to hear this happened to you. I agree, it can be extremely off-putting to a new learner to be treated that way. Doesn’t inspire love for a language, that’s for sure.
