i think DD2 also made me realise we kind of need to reevaluate the relationship between frustration and an enjoyable game experience?? i can barely remember major story quests from most rpgs but the extreme stress of searching for a lost child in the dark in DD2 is permanently burned into my brain

HiFi Rush - I kept bouncing off this as I hate hack and slash games and learning giant lists of combos, but man am I so glad I stuck with it. A true evolution for rhythm games, gorgeously animated, and whoever put Whirring in the soundtrack needs a raise

GTFO - This is a game for complete sickos, and good lord I am those sickos. The mean-spirited antithesis of Left 4 Dead, it's too cruel, too long, and too byzantine, but man, cracking a 3 hour D-level expedition with your friends is an experience like no other.

Returnal - How did these lunatics get a AAA budget to make an uncompromising roguelite with brutal difficulty and an incredibly cryptic story?? The results are astonishing. Insanely satisfying to play, endlessly rewarding to analyse, beautiful to look at. (Do go for ps5 over pc though)

Pseudoregalia - Can you get over a main character being a furry with an absolutely diabolical ass? Or maybe that's a bonus for you? Congrats if you answered yes, this is one of the best 3D platformers I've ever played (imagine putting Hollow Knight's movement set into a 3D space) and it's like £5

Lethal Company - On the comedy/horror scale this leans hard on comedy, with great results. Needs heavy modding for the best experience but I love the bizarre and awkward toolset, the moreish delving into horrible bunkers, and those intense narrow escapes as you scurry back to the ship at 11pm

My Friendly Neighbourhood - Love this one. I had heard a lot about the Resi-style gameplay but I wasn't prepared for such an excellent deconstruction and repudation of mascot horror and childrens youtube slop with a genuinely lovely story. The art deco aesthetics and jazzy music slap too.

Jusant - It's kind of shocking how thin climbing mechanics are in most games (I am a hater of white paint ledges and holding down a single button to scale everything) so this was an absolute delight. Gentle but not without tension, supplemented with stunning art design and great worldbuilding
