walking through a business district and seeing a giant poster for the divine comedy for some reason

the ffvii compilation is so funny in concept, remember when they said loveless was not just something that was coincidentally on a poster but was actually both a shakespeare play and like a biblically important text

rogue nation started. i love a movie where someone in the government goes “there should not be a secret second CIA that’s even less accountable than the first normal CIA” and the audience is supposed to go “actually there SHOULD be one of those”

a three star letterboxd review of mission impossible iii reading “somewhat disposable but it totally works! some of it even works well! not within spitting distance of the first but i like it slightly better than m:i-2. i will say this franchise is lucky it’s got a brad bird movie in the back half because otherwise i’m not sure i would care enough to come back for 4”

a two and a half star letterboxd review of mission impossible 2 reading “genuinely heartbroken to say that on first watch very little of this works. the bioweapon stuff feels so high-stakes and the high coverage slow-mo looks so absurd that you’d think this was a really goofy film but it feels the need to constantly ground itself in really boring ways. why is the villain just a really wild day trader?? why is so much of the conflict built around ethan dating a girl for like two weeks??? it’s also severely lacking in that sweet spy-heist-y tension the first one had. idk. not in love with this. exploding motorcycle chicken is really cool though. i’m not a monster”

feels bad not loving this one because some very cool stuff happens in it and the opening convinced me that i was in for a fun flirty low-stakes adventure but man, nothing really captured me here i’m sorry to say

mission impossible 2 is so far mostly a snooze fest occasionally interrupted by most beautiful woman alive thandiwe newton offering a reminder that she is in this film

it’s incredible how frequently an action movie reveals that the villain’s real motive was stock market manipulation, the most boring crime

i’m looking forward to the sequels but yeah, knowing that they’re all more conventional action flicks is a bit of a bummer given how much i loved the weird spy thriller/heist de palma flair in the first one. although i have heard dead reckoning blends the two tones a bit!

feel a little bad doing this *after* leaving twitter because i’ve got prob ten or twelve oomfs who would go crazy for an excuse to talk about the early mission impossibles

four star letterboxd review of mission: impossible (1996) reading “mental note to hold onto: if you have a thing that you really don’t want anyone to steal, avoid putting it directly underneath a tom cruise sized hole in the ceiling”

beginning my first watch of the mission impossible series :)

every single person i meet on the street every day i’m like “you would be so much better at being in charge than any of the people who are in charge”

i honestly think maybe the best political system would involve picking someone entirely at random every five years or so to be in charge. no way to put your finger on the scale or something, if you are drafted to be president, bad news dude

“kind of a bummer when a great filmmaker is signed to a project that seems like a bad match for their general skill set” —> “why do you wish women were dead”

just not really the chat i was planning on having if i’m being honest

the annoying thing about posting for an inscrutable algorithm is that you never know if your innocuous thought will reach like ten friends who you like talking to and sometimes disagreeing with or seventeen thousand people who each individually want you dead for different reasons

once again thinking about the time george lucas revealed that the “clones” in the clone wars, which had been hinted at for decades, were not clones of any characters we knew or even any characters we would come to know but were instead clones of boba fett’s dad

a five star letterboxd review of asteroid city reading “among the more creatively invigorating things i’ve ever seen. everything is felt secondhand, observed first and ingested later, and the only way to let anyone - even yourself - know is to make something that becomes something else that becomes something else. mechanisms to talk and mechanisms to listen and if everything works out right maybe the work lets you in and you get to love or at least know somebody.”
