I agree with you there. I think the fixation on nostalgia can lead to present-day resentment and cynicism, leading to far worse.
I think I've been inspired by your album to reflect on the intention of that aesthetic era that I find meaningful, and what I could create that would grow out from it--
Definitely could play the 'game/show character you're into starts talking to you and pulls you into their world' fantasy with a setup like that~
The charm of those 90's era 'Utopian Scholastic' shows, games, graphic design, etc. is that it represented a world that you wanted to move toward, not that it was how things actually were.
I imagine idealistic design and art trends in the 50's evoked the same feeling in older generations.
Id be interesting watching your essay if you get around to it. I think underneath the statement"We need to return to X time" is more so a wish to return to childhood.
