hyperfine results are in on start-up time, a.k.a.

Print["Hello, World!"]
vs
#include<stdio.h>
void main() {printf("Hello, World!\n");}

wolframscript took 1.245s
a.out took 1.4ms

C wins by a factor 889!

😄

NB: off course this is in no way neither fair nor a correct real world comparison 🫣

Thank you, Martin!

Very glad you liked it – it was fun to write 😃

Also thank you for mentioning hyperfine. I do think it would be unfair towards Mathematica and Julia to use "wall time" to compare with C. As in maybe >1 order of magnitude…

But now I have to play with that also 😄

…to be cont.

Re-learning something about scientific computing Some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth

I just realized that what I write about in this piece is just the same kind of fun as what I had with my ZX Spectrum 30 years ago. Exactly the kind of joyful uselessness encouraged by the Queen.

Best wishes for a new year filled with useless things that make it fun to be alive 🙂🎇

Does anyone know of good methods for tracking dataset contaminations that doesn't rely on generation? Anything would be greatly appreciated

I told it to speak Danish, which it agreed to — in Norwegian but insisting it was Danish. I actually got a bit carried away due to its very human like language and way of speaking. I don’t need that level of artificial human interaction

Alas, the day’s afoot. For me it began with the news of Googles new AI release and then spiraled into a regular argument with an audio AI on whether it spoke Danish or Norwegian

It probably won’t and it’s just a condition, something unavoidable and we’ll just have to migrate every five years or such.

The victory march of democracy has ended

What can we as researchers do?

In the Scandinavian countries, a particular tool is available: Democracy & Power Studies.

The Danish government appointed me as director of such a study. We started our work this year.

A 🧵 on what we do & how we do it
