UNC professors said 'no' to releasing their syllabuses before. Now, they don't have much of a choice. UNC professor Chris Petsko initially declined when the Oversight Project requested his syllabus this past summer. But after a new UNC System regulation, the second time a request came, he said he felt...

“When asked what effective safeguards against the potential harassment of instructors for the content of their syllabuses would look like, Hatcher was direct: ‘Don't write a policy that invites people to threaten your faculty.’”

White Mediocrity Empowers White Villainy: A Conversation with Koritha Mitchell - Public Books “Not only does whiteness empower folk to destroy entire communities; it empowers them to say to your face that the destruction doesn't have reverberating effects in the current moment.”

And it's in every arena, not just academia. That's why I'm so glad that understanding know-your-place aggression has been valuable for so many others. Recognizing it was sanity saving for me, so I was determined to share:

I was born in an Iranian prison. My parents were held in their jails. My uncles lie in their mass graves.
Nothing you can tell me about the crimes of the Iranian regime that I haven't lived in blood and bone.
That doesn't mean I want my people bombed, maimed, killed, their homes in ruins.
If your vision of liberation comes only through the destruction of innocent lives, then it's not freedom you're after.
Sahar Delijani, Iranian author

I am pro Iranian people. I stand with them against their own government’s repression AND against the imperial violence in the form of bombs dropped from the sky from Israel & the US who have already killed hundreds.

I support neither imperialism or dictatorship.

Sahar Delijani said it best:

As of tonight, licenses of trans people across Kansas are being invalidated en masse, enabling the overnight criminalization of an entire group of people for going about our lives. It’s often said you never know when you’re living through history, so let me assure you: that’s what’s happening now.

These are “low enrollment” majors but the classes are regularly at capacity. They changed the funding structure a few years ago here, switching the allocation from course enrollments to majors then blamed these departments for a structural, top-down change. This is entirely a political choice.

The Misuses of the University - Public Books Have the funds that might have trained the next generation of scholars at the nation’s first research university have been blown on ostentatious new buildings?

Giant donations often increase university’s bills, new operating expenses for proj that may have only tenuous links to the core mission. New fixed costs cannibalize existing funding, increasing pressure to grow revenue... a quip from a former dean: “The endowment is the gift that keeps on taking.”

There is no drawdown. There is no retreat. ICE is just redistributing their assets to better avoid accountability.

Here's what's surprising: This bill passed last Wednesday.

We are only the second news organization to report on it other than Magnolia Tribune.

No abortion rights organization has commented on it.

And @heatherharrison.bsky.social couldn't get any major pro-abortion rights groups to comment.
