The Troubling Personal Side of Public Surveillance Law enforcement cameras are popping up everywhere, but many agencies have little safeguards to prevent abuse by individual officers.

I don’t think we should categorize examples where these systems are used by individuals for stalking or harassment as “misuse” of the technology. This is very much literally why the tech exists, and there are no meaningful ways these uses are prohibited.

What we’re up against now is not new— and it’s essential that we all understand that the state of Alabama was acting as a fascist force of suppression. Many of the troopers & deputized thugs were ALSO Klansmen.

The unheard call for federal troops was as protection against these actual fascists.

Violent attacks by AL State Troopers stopped the Selma march after less than a mile— but I want to underline that these fascists also deputized dozens of overt white supremacist thugs armed with guns, whips, horses, clubs, and cattle prods.

These fascists gleefully terrorized their own community.

Roadside white supremacist onlookers were eager for violence, including audible calls for murder. I included a Nazi salute in my rendering of the scene for MARCH because the American Nazi Party was present as counter-protestors & hecklers on multiple occasions during the Selma movement.

It’s about time someone said it out loud on a national news show.
