✍️I visited British Steel last week - just as workers were discovering that the plant's Chinese owners were effectively planning to starve the blast furnaces to death.
It was a strange, unsettling experience. With deep ramifications. Some thoughts: edconway.substack.com/p/the-strang...

This is a lovely piece by David Runciman, of @ppfideas.bsky.social.
At a time when universities are running away from the lecture, the podcasting boom shows the appetite for serious, long-form and, yes, didactic content by people with specialist understanding.

Oof - sounds rough! Little did I know when I had my third that it would literally take months (whereas the first two got their 🇳🇴 passports in 1-2 weeks)
I will be moderating this timely event on April 8 in which we bring distinguished experts together to discuss our new nuclear disorder. Register by April 4 if you want to attend in person. Live streaming available on the event page.
ONP Doctoral Research Fellow @frhoffmann.bsky.social, together with @marksbell.bsky.social, has published a new article in Foreign Affairs examining the implications of a U.S. withdrawal from the European continent for European nuclear deterrence.
Seriously disturbing. “"We need Greenland for international safety and security. We need it. We have to have it," Trump told podcaster Vince Coglianese. "I hate to put it that way, but we're going to have to have it."” www.france24.com/en/live-news...

While the US is planning a complete stop in European exercise participation by next year, the "Axis" powers are strengthening ties and enhancing interoperability. Later this month, Iran's annual maritime security exercise is set to kick off in the Gulf of Oman with Chinese and Russian warships
Finnish daily @hs.fi is asking the important questions after Kaj’s landmark victory at Melodifestivalen last night:
”Can this lead to a state union between Finland and Sweden ?”

I think Russian intelligence services cannot believe their good fortune at everything that is happening right now. This is a bonanza across the board. The vicious attack on Ukraine, nutters at the FBI, Gabbard at DNI, shredding of CI capabilities. A monumental tragedy for the West.
Comedy is all in the timing. “The Federation of American Scientists published a report Wednesday compiling evidence it says strongly suggests the U.S. Air Force is planning to bring nuclear weapons back to Royal Air Force Base Lakenheath, England.” www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-ai...
Whatever else we can say about the first few months, Starmer has shown some real deftness at foreign policy. Given that will dominate his time in office, that’s some positive.
Remember: the televised punishment & humiliation meted out to Zelensky just now could be done to any NATO ally facing similar aggression. The sense of sneering hostility & contempt by Trump & Vance isn’t specific to Ukraine.
The @oslonuclearproject.bsky.social turns 6! As the launch photo shows, we were worried already then about the challenges ahead. But I could not be more proud of what my colleagues have achieved, and what comes next. Thank you to all my colleagues, former and present, for excellence and hard work.
ONP had a busy February!
