There are only 180 countries on the index; the UAE is below Saudi Arabia, and slightly above China.

As to their opinion of "citizen journalism": since nobody but men born in the UAE to citizens of the UAE has any hope of becoming (or remaining) a citizen, it's an entirely moot point.

@theobserveruk.bsky.social as a scholar of journalism and former resident of Dubai, I'm quite startled at the naivete displayed by the news meeting panel regarding the way in which the UAE controls information and treats the truth with contempt.

It's 164th on the RSF press freedom index.

@michaelhobbes.bsky.social @notalawyer.bsky.social London Metro is a newspaper, ironically available for free on the underground and buses.

That makes you both wrong, I guess.

The New York Times flashback quiz today is a little too on the money.

I'm pretty sure they prep these weeks in advance, but still...

100%, although there are US-specific questions.

Also, I don't want to share my results on X. Can I have other options, please?

So I went down the rabbit hole to find out what Chicken Jockey even is, and… can someone put this in front of Jack Black and ask him and or the Minecraft movie producers to sponsor her?

That's a tradition that if it is not dead yet needs to be killed.

A ginger cat, sitting on a path with his neck to me, but his head turned to stare at me.

Not my cat. We call him Ferdinand.

It refers to the kind of English person in Africa who is more English than the Queen. It refers to having one foot in Africa and one in Europe with your dick hanging in the ocean.

There's also the ever useful rooinek (redneck)

The obvious one is ibhunu, as in dubul ibhunu (kill the boer), a chant from the anti-apartheid movement. Umlumgu was offensive, but it's now considered a neutral term for "white person".

Cont. Because they admired apartheid. I'm not sure there's a word for them other than white supremacist.

I don't think the Boers really had that kind of language, although many of the words that they would have considered neutral descriptors are now highly offensive (and racist).

The thing is, Musk isn't an Afrikaner or a Boer. His family are people who moved to South Africa after WWII

A screenshot of Google maps showing the Gulf of Mexico labeled Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)

I genuinely thought being in the UK would mean I didn't have to see this. I'm irrationally angry at it. In
