As someone who was in that crowd long ago, too much irony really does poison you. It gets you comfortable with vile things, and lets you hide behind something when your actions are called out. Eventually you start believing the "funny" things you say. Especially if others are saying them too.

Its also interesting that most of those cultures start as purely ironic, and then devolve over time to become wholly sincere. Soyjacks were intentionally unfunny and bad, and then overtime became something they couldn't function without. A lot of their language evolved that way too.
