Hot take: I actually think faculty have amazing ideas for saving higher ed and the specificity of local knowledge to save their individual institutions. But they are not ultimately the decision makers, even with “shared governance”
"I got my PhD by writing prompts instead of doing research, I'm winning"
got some bad news, there still no jobs and now you also know nothing

Extremely cool story, be sure to check out the interview with @tannerrobinson.bsky.social in the Science Advisor (I couldn't quite figure out how to link here, but it's delightful) 🌱🧪

No forgiveness without repentance, is my (likely shallow) understanding
Dietrich Bonhoeffer calls this "cheap grace" and identifies it as the "mortal enemy" of the modern church!
This account of the eLife saga will provoke much debate. One aspect isn't accurate: eLife wasn't "designed as an experiment in removing gatekeepers". The original intent was to publish "outstanding papers" but have the gatekeepers be academic not professional editors 1/2 nikomc.com/2026/03/05/e...

Portland, you really get me
This has been many years in the making. We wanted to do it right—not simply get it done.
Our goal was to contribute, however modestly, to an academia that genuinely strives for inclusivity.
May the AWoP—small as the step may be—help move academia toward greater inclusion. 🤝🫂🌈🍉🏳️⚧️✊⚖️♿🦮🌐
I'm so sad to hear through the grapevine about Ralph's passing. He was the chair when I was hired at Wash U and a truly upstanding person.
I interviewed him at one point about what he thought went into making a great leader, and I need to dig those notes up!

Real change takes a movement that goes into the public square, and as @cdelawalla.bsky.social explains, the public square has expanded & requires moving beyond business-as-usual engagement. More on @standupforscience.bsky.social and its strategic calculus:

NIH leadership wants to strip worker's rights from the majority of scientists on its campuses.
But, the NIH does not get to say whether we are a union or not. We do, and we are no strangers to having to fight for our union. Time for a short history lesson. 1/n
Disclaimer: all views are my own.
It's terribly under-reported, and I'm so afraid this plan will succeed
Wonderful project!

A man asked me last night what publishing needs to do for literary fiction to begin appealing to men again. I said, as nicely as I could, that, with over 2,000 books published every Tuesday, of which many would appeal to men, it’s not a publishing problem, it’s a men problem.
Dramatic pronouncements like this--"it's the end of research by humans"--give tacit permission to cede our own agency and abandon any sort of critical digital literacies. And in doing so, they give the forces currently dismantling higher ed more ammunition to argue we aren't necessary.
I was gonna show you anyway. This is most of my new body of work, called Forces of Nature, going on exhibit soon at @hhmijanelia.bsky.social #sciart

Columbia student detained today is a day-in-the-life influencer with 100K followers. Her stories right now go from her studying for a Genetics exam in a nicely edited "ten hour study with me at Columbia" video, to a photo of her knees with the caption "dhs illegally arrested me please help"
Please consider letting the BLM know that their plan to increase logging in old Oregon forests is terrible forest science:

I still remember his comments about women in science, and how my friend Rachael and I were invited up to Harvard by their GWIS to give a talk on our findings from a union alumni phone call study we did in Yale GESO showing that women PhDs were pushed out of science. This was 2005?
The fundamental flaw with @holdenthorp.bsky.social’s argument is thinking that organizations and people can only do one thing at a time (even though he is really close to acknowledging it!)
Let’s break it down, bc I’m tired of this. 🧵
