Two swans floating gracefully in the Brayford Pool, Lincoln UK

Being a PhD student means trips to campus sometimes, which means I get to see the swans!
So I thought I’d share them because…swans!

Asset photo of a sickle-like sword from Breath of the Wild courtesy of the Zelda wiki. Prop version of the Yiga sickle sword made by me! Another view of the Yiga sickle sword held in my hand.

I present the finished prop: a Yiga blademaster sickle sword thingie.

The first photo is from the Zelda wiki, and then there are two of my prop version.

I am sure my nephew will be pleased.

Thank you! It won’t be exactly like the in-game model but it will be close!

A prop I’m making of a Yiga Clan sword (a sickle) from Breath of the Wild

My nephew wishes to be a Yiga Clan swordsman from the Zelda games, so I am making him this sickle sword out of things I have around the house.

This is a progress shot of all parts temporary assembled. Sealing and painting to follow.

A close up of the windows on a model medieval house.

Metal mesh for windows? Sure. Imagine lozenge-shaped pieces of glass set into iron, allowing the light to enter but still being strong.

The latest model house is pretty much done. Maybe it needs a video to showcase all the details. Hrm.

A medieval model house

Thanks! Here’s the finished assembly. Next up, seal and paint the cork.

A model of a medieval house, with a atone ground floor and wood upper floor A model of a medieval house, with a atone ground floor and wood upper floor, plus cork sheets for the crafting of roof shingles

It’s like being in limbo at the moment so I thought I might as well be a roofer for a day and use a cork sheet to make ‘slate’ shingles for the latest model house.

Not a horrible train journey but still over three hours. I’ll have a think.

An inked sketch of a medieval abbey, fantasy version. It has a central church and various outbuildings.

Sometimes I sketch and then the ink reveals something fun.

This is a drawing of what I’ve named the Abbey of Saint Mar. It’s medieval-ish but a bit fantastical as well.

A model of a stone building. The ground floor has two windows and an arched doorway.

The ground floor of a work in progress. I’ve tried a new technique with wall filler plaster to make it look like it has mortar between the blocks.
There’s still adjustments to make for the process but I like it!

Yes! Messers are the best and I’m glad you’re enjoying your foray into them.

The back of a t-shirt that has the word Messerfest on a langesmesser blade, with bunting below, and then a goose fighting a blue lion below that.

This is the back of the t-shirt I picked up from this year’s Messer Fest. It is amazing.

(I also have a video chatting about the event on my YouTube, eight minutes of me happily rambling about it)

It was insanely good and my fencing received many compliments! Truly wonderful.

A picture of Lauren holing up a sword called a langesmesser aka long knife aka awesome

This weekend I attended Messerfest in York and it was amazing.

Lots of fun with the ‘long knife’ in the friendliest environment. Workshops, lectures, and I managed 28 fights including some against the best messerists around.

Truly a joyful experience.

Lauren is standing at the base of a motte (an artificial hill) upon which is Clifford’s Tower in the city of York.

Sometimes one must stand in front of something medieval while on an adventure.

This is me at the base of Clifford’s Tower in York. Because I like medieval things. And I’m sure you knew that already.

Safety Tips for Swords YouTube video by Lauren Danger Shaw

It has been a while since I made a video, but one about safety tips for swords is live, and if you are into sword fighting and not being injured, it could be helpful!

The northeast tower of Lincoln Castle: a multi-storey round tower made of limestone blocks.

Inspiration in my own city is never far away. Look at this lovely tower at Lincoln Castle!

Lauren standing with a longsword in one hand and a scholar’s certificate in the other.

Hard works pays dividends: I’m now a scholar at my local HEMA club.

We didn’t do ranks at my previous clubs which is fine, but this is something new for me and I’m proud of the work I put in.
