Hands Off in Raleigh. Hitched a ride with friends who had never protested before, but they're worried - not about themselves, but things like cuts in cancer research, airline safety, health care, libraries, social security + relationships with key global partners, preserving a free press + much more

Empty chair town hall in Raleigh tonight. HUGE crowd - one person missing: Sen. Tillis. We have a lot of questions he’s not answering, but he’ll keep hearing from us

WHY SHE WEARS HUMMINGBIRDS ON FISHING LINE AROUND HER NECK

after Deborah Luster's Rosesucker Retablo, 1993

Because her face is haunted,
and causes go so far back here
they scarcely bear the illusion or name
of cause, material or formal. Rather,
the birds are effects of living out of death: mushrooms lifting from mycelium
rings, invisible under the forest floor.
Spores drifting in the air. A burr
in an animal's coat. Her mouth
tired like a fox's fur when mange
takes over and it sheds but doesn't
reveal a new fox. Maybe the birds
keep away snakes, like a snake
hung in a tree keeps away drought
by bringing on rain. Maybe cause
and effect are dirt and sky and little
else beyond. Here is the rain. It comes
like a child, listening to no one
but its own internal vane of weather.

Absolutely pouring in Durham, NC—

“Here is the rain. It comes like a child, listening to no one but its own internal vane of weather.”
