There have now been 12 deaths in LASD custody this year.Β This is over double the number of year-to-date deaths as last year, and is second only to 2021 for year-to-date deaths for the past 20 years.Β
Many of us will still be attending the meeting tomorrow to demand accountability.

They were wrongfully convicted as teens. Now L.A. County is paying them $24 million
L.A. County will pay $27 million to settle shooting, wrongful conviction lawsuits against Sheriffβs Department
In 1997, Los Angeles County Sheriffβs Department "made up" evidence against 2 teens to pin a murder on them.
When the real killer - who later confessed - killed again LAPD pinned THAT murder on yet someone else.

State regulators find mold, broken toilets, missing fire safety records in L.A. County jails
The state board that inspects jails is asking the L.A. County sheriff to address their concerns at a February meeting.
When state inspectors visited Men's Central Jail in LA this fall, they found mold, broken toilets & rodent droppings. It appeared that guards werenβt doing their required hourly checks & there were no records of monthly fire inspections.

Care First L.A.: Tracking Jail Decarceration
Explore data on the people incarcerated in the Los Angeles County jail system. Track the county's progress in reducing its jail population.
The Vera Institute released a tool to track LA Co's unfulfilled promise to decrease the jail population. Highlights: over 40% of inmates have mental health needs and over 50% are pretrial and thus are constitutionally still innocent. 40 people in jail have died so far. Join @justicela.bsky.social!
