I am devastated to learn that my sports scheduling colleague and coauthor Kelly Easton has passed away. Kelly was instrumental in the success we had in scheduling Major League Baseball and countless other leagues. Deep condolences to husband Todd (Utah OR professor) and their family.
My postdoctoral year at his institute was one of the foundational times of my career. He had a tremendous impact on our field.
Interesting article on quantum speedup www.quantamagazine.org/quantum-spee... but I wish @quantamagazine.bsky.social journalists would learn than 10 city TSPs or even Vehicle Routing Problems are not particularly hard and aren't solved by complete enumeration.
My friend Stan Zin explains why he gave up Gmail. If you know why stanzin might be popular, you can understand why. world.hey.com/stan.zin/not...
Jacques Desrosiers delivered the sad news that an #orms giant has left us forever:
François Soumis passed away last night. The depot of this last vehicle tour is in heaven.
A great self indulgence just in time for my birthday.

Very sorry to see the passing of Hugh Bradley. Hugh was instrumental in the development of ORSA, TIMS, INFORMS, and particularly IFORS, where he was treasurer for almost a decade. I will value my time with him and what I learned from him. www.vacahillschapel.com/obituary/hug...
There are things we do at every university I have been at that no one remembers why.
I'm thrilled that The Operational Research (OR) Society has posted the video recording of my 2024 Blackett Lecture, NetwORks and Policies: OR to the Rescue, delivered at The Royal Society in London on Dec. 5. #orms #networks #supplychains #labor #policies #gametheory

Perhaps arxiv.org/pdf/2102.09663 ? Unless I am reading this wrong, their "large" instances in that paper have 9 variables and 18 constraints.
I'm not sure whether to be disappointed about how much (human) work it takes or be amazed that copilot can do as much as it does.
I am very pleased to announce that a 1996 paper I wrote on graph coloring and column generation with Anuj Mehrotra was given a "Test of Time" award by the INFORMS Journal of Computing for papers written 1995-1999. The full citation is at pubsonline.informs.org/doi/10.1287/...
There are still 7 days left for the abstract deadline, and 14 days until the full paper deadline! Just enough time to submit your brilliant idea and come present it in Melbourne!
The OpenReview page is ready for you: openreview.net/group?id=cpa...
