Maybe one day we'll be able to see the diorama painting non-obstructed but for now, unfortunately my fun little side project of comparing the two grand canyons started and ended pretty quickly. Thanks for joining me on this journey! [10/10]

05.05.2025 03:25 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Another theory I have is the photograph referenced could have been a lot older than when it was painted in the late 50s, but it seems unlikely the canyon would change that much in such a short period (1958 to now)

05.05.2025 03:25 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I'd love to find the reference photo the artist used for this painting and if maybe it consists of some East and West viewpoints. I'm assuming they didn't bring a 40 foot tall/306 foot long canvas to the actual canyon for the artist to paint on site๐Ÿ˜‚

As for the far right portion of the diorama, the part you see right away upon entering the tunnel, I could NOT find a canyon cliff with that little notch taken out of it. You also cannot see the Colorado River from the South Rim (specifically the Bright Angel Trail viewpoint).

05.05.2025 03:25 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Another issue I ran into is the canyon walls all look so similar, it's nearly impossible to tell which one should be what, so it's possible I didn't even pinpoint the correct areas. BUT, I also couldn't find any canyon cliffs that looked JUST like the painting.

The unfortunate part of viewing the diorama from the railroad is that most of the painting is obstructed by the foliage and animals on display within it. This is the best shot you can get of the canyon backdrop and as I've highlighted here... doesn't really line up well with the real thing.

This canyon cliff on the far left of the diorama was the only one I could for sure match up with the real deal. It has a really unique shape and is much larger than any of the other canyon walls.

My theory is that the canyon from the south wasn't as long as the diorama painting was supposed to be. Add a few extra canyons in, no one's gonna notice, right? Here's a pano I took at the canyon myself. There's really not much more past the building on the right other than the other canyon wall.

05.05.2025 03:25 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I'm starting to realize the panorama painting in Disneyland may not be all that accurate to the real deal! The diorama is based on the South Rim of the canyon. But I'm starting to see, as I'm comparing photos of the painting to the real thing, the might've artist taken a TON of liberties.

05.05.2025 03:25 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I was going to do a long thread and compare one of the Grand Canyon South Rim viewpoints to its counterpart within the Disneyland Railroad and highlight the exact cliffs from the real canyon that appear in the diorama's painting. However... ๐Ÿงต[1/10]
