A chart showing Life satisfaction across individuals of different ages at baseline. Life satisfaction scores range between 1 to 5. The curve is J shaped with life satifaction scores starting low and reaching the lowest point at age 21 (satisfaction score of 3.5). This slowly increase until age 25 when increase becomes steeper.

While Western studies show life satisfaction hits rock bottom in midlife, rural China tells a different story—young adults at just 21 are the LEAST satisfied group. What's behind this?
