I don't think we understand just how bad the decline of the Internet is to knowledge.

3 years ago, I could perform a very basic search in any engine and get an absurd number of relevant links, research articles, etc.

Today, I can perform the same search and find absolutely nothing.

This is a drum I've been banging for a while -- if it were true that higher taxes made rich people flee for low tax areas, there would be no rich people living in CA or NYC! It's a claim that's used a lot by anti-government types and it's long been visibly and demonstrably false.

Thanks - that sounds like a useful point of cognitive dissonance to address when discussing the fundamental immorality of war.

Then there's the ones going "it's the oil money" - again trying to exempt themselves from having to recognise the successful outcomes of socialist policies and worker's struggles by pretending Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, the Faroes and the rest of Europe doesn't exist.

What the hell, people?

Then there's "Norway is successful because it's so small and homogeneous" - a combination of American exeptionalism and racist dogwhistle which signals complete ignorance of all of the history of Scandinavia since the end of the ice age.

So "Norway isn't socialist, it's proof that capitalism can do welfare states" is the incredibly condescending kickoff. Implying "socialism is bad, so anything good that happens can't be socialism". Ignoring century and a half of labour movement's socialist struggle for basic rights and protections.

Saw a very popular comment on Norwegian history over on Zucky's more annoying imitation of twitter. Limited who can reply, which makes for a very intense little echo chamber.

Learning the informatics, theory, methods, languages, would have been much more useful, relevant and interesting. In analogy, learning to prompt chatgpt is minimally useful. Learning the basics of coding, structured data and machine learning, however, seems like a much better bet on the future.

This but from the middle of a thread on teaching AI set off some thoughts. We did get some excel in school. But the reason it was useful wasn't learning to use that specific software. Excel is just one proprietary UI and standard for structured data. ->
