Speaking of acting, this is a solid cast, and yet there are several scenes in this movie where they perform much worse than I’ve ever seen them perform (Mescal, Nielsen, Pascal). Most of the time, the acting is believable, especially Mescal’s, but at times you just don’t believe the character.

There’s a fight scene in which Lucius impresses, and instead of just showing us, Denzel Washington actually says, to no one specifically, « I’m interested! »

Now I don’t want to bash Denzel, he’s probably the best thing in this movie, but the dialogue and story was not at his level.

Does it bother me that they would make him his son now? No, I think it’s coherent. But the first movie was very subtle about it, and the way they tell mention Maximus in this movie is anything but subtle. Actually, nothing in this movie is subtle.

The second reason, is that it keeps telling you about the first movie, and it even tries to rewrite it! You know what’s not in the first movie? Maximus treating Lucius as his son. Is it hinted that he could be? VERY, VERY FAINTLY. There’s one line that makes you wonder, that’s it.

You could wonder why they chose to stick so close to the script that they would even copy irrelevant details, as the more you do it, the more obvious it is that what worked in the first doesn’t work as well in the second. The character, although charming and likable, is uninspiring and uninspired.
