They're basically two entirely different (equally good) works that share a couple names and plotlines

Even the manga art is entirely different

Manga is more centered on a couple characters and Hachi's ambitions while the anime is more about everyone and everything+more

this is actually kinda funny because the last third of the Planetes anime is the part that adapted the manga (though iirc it still diverged at a few points)

if you haven't read it, it's very different from the show and only 26 chapters long. it was my first manga and is still a fave
