The otters—another group that has seen a decline in living memory—could make a case like “Hey, you could continue being the 100,000th most notorious deer, or you could rise to prominence within our raft.”

A newcomer who is trying to figure out what animal they are could be lobbied by say, the squirrel population—which used to be much larger—as a kind of conservation effort.

Even if it isn’t about bringing in new people, it could be about bringing a more equitable distribution to the current census.

I’m against mainstreaming furry, but there have been a number of posts in recent times to the tune of “everyone should have a fursona.”

And I think there’s an opportunity there for underrepresented species to bolster their numbers.
