Can birth control really change your mood?
This week on the podcast, Dr. Inger Sundström Poromaa & Dr.
@liisagalea.bsky.social discuss how hormones shape mental health, and why women deserve better answers.

While you are all waiting for treat or treaters & the blue jay game … take a look at our newest from
@bonniee-leee.bsky.social where we look at neural networks in middle aged female rats based on APOE genotype and parity history www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Farida (one of my fav people) also talks about how to make lemonade when the science gives you 🍋🍋🍋 (hint it’s also why she went from brain to gut to ovary) follow where the science takes you because it can be a glorious- though lemony - journey!
Why do women often have more severe strokes than men? 🧠
Dr. Farida Sohrabji joins Dr. @liisagalea.bsky.social on Women’s Health Interrupted to unpack sex differences, estrogens, & gut health in stroke.

Menopause. Not a secret. Not a sentence. A stage — and it deserves support.
🎧 Shirley Weir joins Dr. @liisagalea.bsky.social on Women’s Health Interrupted to bust myths & spark better conversations.

I am so proud to be producing this podcast. The first episode has absolutely smashed our expectations. Thank you all for the interest in women’s health!!
Cell Type-Specific Remodelling of the Female Hippocampus by Reproductive Experience and Age https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.09.17.676894v1
New preprint showcasing @mcgovernaj.bsky.social ‘s work. Using single cell deconvolution on bulk RNAseq from hippocampi of previously parous rats we found 3 cell types with independent parity effects decreases in CA3 pyramidal & SST interneurons but increases in astrocytes. Let us know your thoughts
Absolutely LOVED Project Hail Mary, easily my fave sci-fi! Maybe not *fun* but the last good book I read was Everything Is Tuberculosis by John Green
📢 PhD opening at @uoft.bsky.social in the @liisagalea.bsky.social Lab! Work on women’s brain health & Alzheimer’s risk prediction as part of the global CARE initiative. 🧠 🧪

Really excited for this to be out: "Neural Metabolic Networks: Key Elements of Healthy Brain Function"🧪
Deep dive into how brain cells cooperate through metabolic networks to power cognition - and what breaks down Alzheimer's, Parkinson's & ALS 🧬

Proud day for the Irish! ☘️
Damn. Haven’t even heard of wildfires there
How did you learn this…
I wonder how long it would take to just start calling them 'effers'...
The White House treats rising diagnoses like failure, not progress. Fine. Science should just rename disorders every decade. They get their “cure,” we get reality 🧪
Lunge lunge lunge
Dear Hank and John will be so fun this week
“6% of white men vs 25% of all women … were fired” is blatant, even by their standards
Wow. Talk about him hitting picking the wrong fight
We need better Alzheimer's disease tests for women which capture this effect!!
Sometimes women with Alzheimer's can have a slower progression of symptoms that suddenly get worse - what if the symptoms we are testing are compensated due to pregnancy like we see here? Perhaps the brain compensates to a point, which once passed results in fast disease progression.
See we found no group differences in the number of spatial navigation errors between the groups, but completely different regions associated with producing this behavior.
This is so important- somehow pregnancy both 'improves' brain ageing, yet increases our risk of Alzheimer's disease?! This data shows that pregnancy and Alzheimer's disease genotype changes the brain, reducing the activity of some regions whilst compensating with new networks!
