I’ll always read your column if I see it. At 18, a yr can feel like an eternity & some may never circle back to higher ed. Depleting unis of students for 12 mths will not β€œfix” the tertiary education section, it will make it worse. For those wanting to be there, uni is still +ve & life formative.

I read your column. I agree that the uni sector is so far from perfect right now, but was disheartened to read your advice to potential students to stay away. The world needs smart, educated people more than ever & academics are here in universities driven to help students fulfil their potential.

Hi Scientific/Medical Journal Editors, Curious to know whether you're using AI search engines when looking for reviewers for papers, above & beyond generated lists a journal may send you accompanying a new paper under review. If so, how are you finding this works for you? πŸ§ͺ #MedSky #SciSky

All scientists are good cooks I believe! Here is one of my weekend lunch winter soups. Add truffle oil & a little yoghurt & it’s a flavour explosion in your mouth - leek, zucchini, Italian parsley, broccoli, chickpeas, garlic, fennel, lemon juice, vegie stock. #soup #ScientistsWhoCook

From molecular structures to research culture: Celebrating Rosalind Franklin’s legacy | Royal Society Rosalind Franklin never lived to see the full impact of her discoveries. She didn’t witness how her work on DNA would revolutionise biology, nor did she witness the impact she would have in…

Born #OnThisDay in 1920 was Rosalind Franklin. Her work on X-ray diffraction images of DNA helped lead to the discovery of its structure, but her efforts were only recognised posthumously. Liz Sockett FRS and Isabelle Moss reflect on her enduring legacy:

Does anyone else find it crazy that you can walk into a bookshop and be charged Β£9.99 for a paperback novel that took the author a year to complete, but Β£17.99 for a completely blank notebook?

Elements of that for sure but that is relatively consistent over time I would think

Other search engines seem to be finding and listing papers once they are published and so 'findable' earlier than Pubmed. An e.g. that my own university uses is Symplectic Elements that is finding much earlier. Just wondering if something is changing? #Pubmed

#Perplexity is a helpful resource in science. I ask my question, look at the response, and then always ask "show me the publications" that I then read. If we don't use these tools we will be like ostriches with heads in the sand. If we use them without checks & balances; however, we are fools. #AI

Particularly interesting results with the FAK inhibitor narmafotinib (#AMP945) in advanced pancreatic cancer, also making the popular press this weekend. I note that the FDA has granted Fast Track Designation to #narmafotinib for advanced pancreatic cancer. This will be an interesting space to watch

A timely article. Many Australian unis are in trouble. Our sector is in trouble. I work with amazing colleagues who go above & beyond every day … yet, my university is staring down the barrel of 400 redundancies. At a time when we need unis the most, as a country we are not stepping up to the mark.

In January, I visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. It was freezing, the park nearly empty as I rang the peace bell with my daughter. Profound, humbling & moving experience. I wish time in this park was mandatory for all world leaders who need to pause & think on what they're doing. #Hiroshima #war
