This means individuals in the following statuses at the time of application are eligible: Undergraduate in the final (senior) year of a bachelor’s degree program Bachelor’s degree-holder with NO enrollment in a graduate degree program (non-degree graduate coursework allowed) Individual enrolled in a joint bachelor’s-master’s degree program with at least three undergraduate years completed First-year graduate student in their first graduate degree program with less than one academic year completed in the degree program (according to institution’s academic calendar) Individuals enrolled in joint bachelor’s-master’s degree programs are considered graduate students. For GRFP, joint bachelor’s-master’s degrees are defined as degrees concurrently pursued and awarded. Not be a current NSF employee. Applications that do not meet eligibility requirements will be returned without review as being ineligible for a fellowship.

Announcing such a major change to NSF GRFP this late in the cycle is incredibly cruel. 2nd yr students (mine included) have been working so hard on their proposals despite ongoing uncertainty. They are driven and passionate about being outstanding scientists and helping those coming up behind them.

Current mood.

I really enjoyed writing this piece, and collaborating with Dr. Miguel Cano and several (former) graduate and undergraduate students! This prompted my development of a new study @adapt206.bsky.social, hoping to address some of the research gaps we noted. Stay tuned for our ABC Study!

We critiqued the “weak” theories behind the links btn acculturation factors and alcohol use, imprecise operationalization, disconnect btn science & clinical practice, and importantly, discussed opportunities for scientific advancement in the study of alcohol across populations.

I don’t claim expertise as a qualitative researcher! Just challenging those critiques—some are misconceptions!

"Preregistration" lumps three distinct practices into one:

- Study registration
- Protocol
- Analysis plans (SAPs)

To advance open science, it's critical that we distinguish them.

QUAL research should and can include analysis plan, inc theoretical frameworks used for analysis (eg, ethnography, CQR?), when and how analysis will be performed (in conjunction or after data collection), how saturation will be determined, how and if triangulation will be used etc

Thanks to @apadivision45.bsky.social for the invitation to chime in on engaging dialogs about important topics, validating how hard it can be to conduct research on these issues, and ways we should advance this science!

And we got to facilitate more conversations about bridging open science & multicultural research from diverse discipline and career stages. And I got to spend time connecting with mentors and old friends!

July was a busy research-filled month! I presented @researchmj.bsky.social @apadivision45.bsky.social conferences in Michigan on hot-off-the-press findings from our @barsstudy.bsky.social. Some photos of students who presented posters. More community-facing dissemination soon!

Continued thoughtful cost-benefit analysis, consultation with working partners and populations, and careful planning to protect participant welfare and research study integrity are needed. As we advance science and use new tools, we hope to see more philosophical dialogs and meta-science research!

Now in press in JERHRE: we considered the ethics of using new tech such as VR in understanding discrimination experiences. We intentionally collected data from research participants, as opposed to imposing researchers’ views to speak for them. Data and materials shared, and study registered.
