Safety and first aid training can help prevent accidents onboard and reduce the number of fishers hurt while at work.

The ITF fights for better safety for fishers on an international level through agreements that ensure minimum standards on fishing vessels.

Fishing is the most dangerous job in the world, with thousands of fishers dying every year and many more injured.

We need collective bargaining by independent trade unions at the national level, or through organisations like the ITF at the international level.

Anything less and there is no guarantee that workers rights are not being infringed.

Certification is not the solution. For example, the MSC is an ecolabel focused on overfishing and the environment and “makes no social claims”.

Allegations on vessels in MSC fisheries therefore “don’t fall within the scope” of its remit.

Tuna is one of the most consumed fish in the world but the food on your plate may have been caught by fishers facing human rights abuses - beatings, excessive hours and inadequate food.

At #COP30 this week, ITF Affiliate, CNTTL, has been demonstrating union power both in transport meetings and on the streets.

The transition to a lower carbon future must be a just transition with decent work in all sectors and regions.
