calling them hallucinations seems to me to connote that some sort of abnormal perception is going on. but in fact (1) there is no perception at all, as there is no perceiver, and (2) there’s nothing abnormal about it. all the chatbot answers are “hallucinations,” but some happen to be right

Having read a bunch of really sharp critiques of AI, I’ve found myself assuming that AI entrepreneurs must have equally smart arguments. I’m always astounded to find that they don’t: it’s just easily disproven boosterism. But then, of course it is. It doesn’t matter, because capital is behind them.

The latest innovations in LLMs and generative AI have made such efforts both more powerful and more opaque, according to a new report published by a coalition of sociologists and algorithmic discrimination researchers.

Though ChatGPT and generative AI might be a newer phenomenon, artificial intelligence isn't.

Algorithms have been around for decades, and police departments have been using algorithms for years to enable predictive policing.
