Perhaps dynamical systems theory, and/or the critical point hypothesis, etc.will help at least better define the shadows.

Some time ago during my research I had the thought that all the measures we have of brain activity, and the research we do, are based on shadows cast upon the walls by the systems that are really of interest.
I think this is why, e.g. using EEG to detect seizure activity is so challenging. 1/n
