Yeah, martials with two-handers will outdamage. Casters compare nicely early on to 1 handers and ranged attacks.

Casters catch up later because spells scale faster than weapons.

A small part of that is the level range of enemies is smaller at the lowest levels.

Common enemy levels are in the range of PL -2 to +2 with occasional wiggle up or down one.

You literally can't run into -2 enemies until you are lv3 and pre lv5 the APs tend to use lower than the top. So.... yeah.

Legit a caster 1-4 is gonna be pretty level with a martial on weapons unless they spread out too much and with SF2e afoot they can all pretty much cantrip for 2d4 to 2 targets at level 1.

There's literally no way they are doing less than a martial without bad luck. They literally can do 1d8+4d4 Lv1

Me saying that people telling others to buy games that are built around a specific type of story to tell that type of story are treating TTRPGs as being built for a specific use does not in fact say anything about what I think of other RPGs.

And I don't think individual game mechanics don't matter.

I'm saying the existence of some mechanics don't define the stories you can tell with other mechanics in the system.

Is there free generic rules light games? Sure.

But is it inherently better for the job because it has less stuff in it?

Is that game bad at telling a political intrigue story because they don't have social combat rules and they in theory could punch a guy? No. You can just roleplay that. That's narrative.

Are you incapable of scaring players or featuring horrors because they can fight cultists? No. That's narrative.
