100% relatable- I’ve stopped using all cardboard years ago because of PFAS. Also paper recycling is one of the forms of recycling that actually work.

The best time to build a composting facility was twenty years ago, the next best one is today.

Junk food can still be composted 😅 unless they add heavy metals 😁 even fats and other ultra processed ingredients are safe to add to the compost collection. The decomposers are going to break it up and it’ll be fine. Microbes love carbohydrates too

There are some pointers for sure! Anything that repels water indicates PFAS. It’s invisible though and thresholds have just been lowered by EPA from parts per billion to parts per trillion, so I am just done with cardboard in general for any compost going out on edible landscapes

I am so glad to see that compost socks have been deployed by the official debris flow teams to capture some of that pollution!

If you are worried about contamination in compost, don’t use cardboard. I’ve used it for years until Iearned about PFAS. Recycled paper has a very high chance of PFAS contamination because it’s all mixed together 😭

There are contamination issues but the 70% aren’t substantiated, or do you have hard data on this?

Make an new dedicated account and transfer ownership.

Composting at home is always a balance of pragmatism and elegance :)

All of these but coated paper can be composted. They fall in the category "troublemakers for beginners"

They are all very attractive to rodents, that's why it's often advised against composting then. However with the correct set-up they all compost well, without issues!
