Spent the week at the USFS Starkey Experimental Forest in north-central Oregon (near La Grande).
Extensive old basalt flows capped by ~7500 year old ash deposits that drastically changed the distribution of vegetation, making for interesting hydrology today.

06.06.2025 15:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The underside of a GNSS antenna is seen against blue sky. The antenna is attached to an antenna mount pole which was originally bright shiny stainless steel but is now corroded to a rusty black patina. In the upper right, an antenna cable is attached to the antenna. The connector also used to be shiny stainless steel, but is now corroded with black and white deposits.
Looking up from the base of a rocky slope, a slight path leads up to a GNSS station (the antenna of which is highlighted against a bright blue sky). The path doesn't look too long or steep, but the site is at 17,300 feet elevation and walking up to the site felt like a much, much longer slog.
Fumarole on Lastarria volcano. Steam and other gasses are rising from a fumarole covered with bright yellow sulfur deposits. It really stank.
Life is hard if you are a GNSS station on a volcano with lots of fumaroles β everything wants to corrode you. This station was part of a National Science Foundation funded project (details below). Under the FY2026 proposed budget, NSF Earth Science funding would take a 64% hit. #VolcanoMonday π§ͺβοΈπ
